One of the oft made criticisms of Science Fiction films is that we (the audience) hear the sound of the spacecraft as they fly in the vacuum of space. That explosions can only be heard when the shockwave hits the hull of the ship. It appears to me that there are at least two ways of thinking about this.

(1) I know of no-one that seriously believes that the London Symphony Orchestra is holed out on the same ball of rock as our heroes. So perhaps we should treat the explosions as part of our own cinematic experience.

(2) My new cellphone has a touch screen. To make it easier to use I can set it to vibrate when I touch the right part of the screen. Perhaps the sounds that the characters hear and virtually created by the ships computer. In the heat of battle it makes sense that ALL senses are active and being able to hear the space craft approaching (in Dolby surround sound, naturally) may be of tactical advantage.

Or it  might be something else... If anyone is reading this. What do you think?

As RTD's reign on Doctor Who comes to an end. I was contemplating (as I often do) his work on Doctor Who this last 5 years.

There is much of what has done that I have not liked. But he has created a show that has followers from 6 to 60. And I suspect that the bits of the show that offend my adult sensibilites would be the very bits that I would be recreating in the playground when I was 6 myself.

Russell has rehabilitated a show bring it back from geekdom (and I know, I was one of those geeks) to mainstream.

And for that he deserves our praise.

Thank you Russell.

I have had flu in the past and I have seen its effect on others. So each year I have the jab. This year I have had two: 'regular flavour' and 'swine flu flavour'. The media has so many confusing messages about Swine Flu but I trust my GP and she says that "Yes there is a pandemic" and "Yes it is serious" so that is all I needed to know.

You might think me niave to believe my doctor, but I have complete trust in the current practice I use.

I use Twitter (sometimes), Facebook (not as often as I should), Wordpress (is growing cobwebs) and also Weebly. And in the last few weeks I have become an early adopter of Google Wave!

I have tried linking them with... mixed results.

One webpage, or application (For a Mac) that links them all. That I can send people to perhaps? Was the web always meant to be that confusing!
